Copa América 2024 Recap: Mexico Eliminated as Venezuela and Ecuador Advance from Group B

Mexico's Copa América journey came to an end following a scoreless draw with Ecuador at State Farm Stadium on Sunday. Ecuador moves on to the quarterfinals as the runner-up in Group B, with Venezuela advancing as the group winner.

Here's a recap of Sunday's Copa América action, with stats from FOX Sports Research:

Venezuela 3, Jamaica 0

Venezuela secured the top spot in their group at Copa América for just the second time in history, the first being in 2007. They achieved a historic feat by winning all three of their group stage matches for the first time ever. Venezuela has remained unbeaten in Copa América group play five times: 2007, 2011, 2016, 2019, and 2024.

Salomón Rondón, Venezuela's all-time leading scorer, netted his 43rd international goal, outscoring the rest of the squad combined (36). Venezuela has an impressive record of 24-3-6 (W-L-D) in matches where Rondón has scored.

Jamaica, on the other hand, has yet to earn a point at Copa América, remaining winless in nine games. Historically, Venezuela is 5-2-1 (W-L-D) against Jamaica.

Mexico 0, Ecuador 0

Ecuador has now reached the quarterfinals in three of the last four editions of Copa América. Before this recent success, they were eliminated in the group stage for six consecutive tournaments. This year, Ecuador matched their total number of wins from the previous seven Copa Américas combined.

Mexico faced a familiar fate, needing a win in their final group game to advance for the third time (2011, 2015, 2024), and being eliminated each time. This marks the first instance where Mexico started Copa América with a win but failed to advance from the group stage. It’s also the third time in the last four tournaments they’ve been eliminated in the group stage (2011, 2015, 2024). Their single goal scored is tied for the fewest they’ve ever scored in a Copa América tournament.

In their Copa América history, Mexico and Ecuador have faced off four times, with Mexico leading the all-time series 2-1-1 (W-L-D).
