Red Sox Steal the Show: Hamilton's Record Night Leads to 9-3 Victory Over Yankees

Boston's Zack Kelly successfully navigated a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the seventh inning before Connor Wong's two-run triple in the bottom of the same inning led the Red Sox to a 9-3 win over the top-ranked New York Yankees on Sunday night.

The Red Sox set a club record with nine stolen bases, with David Hamilton swiping four, winning two out of three games against the Yankees. This game featured the most stolen bases in a major league game this season and the most given up by the Yankees since May 19, 1915.

"David really led the way," Boston outfielder Jarren Duran said about Hamilton. "I got a couple too. When we can run the bases like that, it really benefits the team."

Hamilton stole second base in the third inning, then second and third in the fifth, setting the club record with another steal in the eighth. Duran also had two stolen bases.

"It was just a fun game overall," Hamilton commented.

Aaron Judge hit his league-leading 26th home run, a solo shot, while Jose Trevino also hit a solo homer for the Yankees (50-24).

"They got on base and once they did, they moved into scoring position," Judge said about Boston's base stealing. "They made the most of their chances all night."

Boston's starter Kutter Crawford (3-6) matched his career-high with nine strikeouts, allowing three runs, three hits, and one walk over six innings.

After dropping the series opener, the Red Sox gave their first back-to-back sellout crowds of the season at Fenway Park plenty to cheer about.

Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo exited the game in the seventh inning after a collision with Red Sox pitcher Brennan Bernardino at first base, injuring his right arm.

Bernardino reached for a wide throw by Dominic Smith, causing the collision. Rizzo fell hard after crossing the bag safely, immediately grabbing his wrist and hand. The club reported a right lower arm injury.

"The initial X-Ray was negative, but he's in pain in several spots on his lower arm," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "He'll have more tests (Monday) to determine the extent of the injury. When he didn't get up right away, I knew he was hurt."

Marcus Stroman (6-3) allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings.

New York narrowed the gap to 4-3 in the sixth inning when Jose Trevino homered into the Green Monster seats and Anthony Volpe scored on a wild pitch. Judge later homered into the last row of the Monster seats.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Yankees: The decision on ace Gerrit Cole’s next start, whether with the Yankees or another rehab assignment, is imminent. “We should decide tonight or definitely tomorrow,” Boone said. Recovering from an elbow injury since spring training, Cole reported feeling good after his third rehab start. … Placed top prospect Jasson Domínguez on the minor league injured list due to a left oblique injury from a check swing. … Boone also confirmed that outfield prospect Everson Pereira had undergone season-ending internal brace surgery on his throwing elbow two weeks ago.

Red Sox: Reliever Chris Martin (anxiety) pitched a scoreless inning for Triple-A Worcester on Sunday. The team is likely to activate him on Tuesday. “He’s in a good place,” manager Alex Cora said. “Hopefully, this helped him reset, and we’ll get the best version of him - a strike-throwing machine with quality strikes.” … INF Romy Gonzalez (strained left hamstring) went 4-for-6 with three RBIs for Worcester. “There’s a good chance he’ll join us in Toronto,” Cora said.

UP NEXT

Yankees: LHP Nestor Cortes (3-5, 3.59 ERA) will start the opener of a three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday against second-place Baltimore. RHP Albert Suárez (3-0, 1.61) is scheduled to pitch for the Orioles.
