Orioles Triumph Over Phillies in Potential World Series Preview

If this weekend's Orioles-Phillies series truly foreshadows the World Series, it's clear that the Fall Classic will be a showcase of explosive talent and power.

This star-studded matchup was a spectacle of big performances, strong pitching, and plenty of slugging. Sunday afternoon was no different, as the Orioles launched four home runs to back Corbin Burnes, who outdueled Zack Wheeler in a showdown of two top MLB aces, leading to an 8-3 victory at Camden Yards on Father’s Day.

With this win, Baltimore heads to New York for a three-game series against the American League's top team, the Yankees, starting Tuesday, having taken two out of three games from the National League’s best team.

Manager Brandon Hyde anticipated a tough challenge, noting the formidable pitching and batting lineup the Orioles would face. Despite losing pitcher Kyle Bradish to injury on Friday, the Orioles' rotation proved resilient, with standout performances from Grayson Rodriguez on Saturday and Burnes on Sunday.

Burnes, facing Wheeler for the first time, delivered a stellar performance with seven strikeouts over six innings, marking his 10th consecutive quality start. This achievement places him among a select group of Orioles pitchers to achieve such a streak in a single season. Burnes and Wheeler are forever linked by the 2021 NL Cy Young Award, narrowly won by Burnes over Wheeler.

Though unavailable for comment after the game due to a personal matter, Burnes' efforts were well-supported by the Orioles' offense, which scored eight runs off Wheeler. This tied Wheeler's career high for runs allowed in a start, a record he hadn't matched since 2018. Gunnar Henderson started the scoring with a leadoff home run, Adley Rutschman added a solo blast in the third, and Colton Cowser hit a 443-foot two-run homer. Jordan Westburg capped the scoring with a three-run homer in the fifth.

Cowser praised Henderson's leadoff at-bat, noting the intense, playoff-like atmosphere at Camden Yards. The Orioles' bats showcased their ability to hit premier pitching, a testament to their offensive growth.

With the All-Star break approaching, the Orioles, holding the second-best record behind the Yankees, continue a tough stretch of their schedule. They've performed well against strong competition, going 4-2 against Atlanta and Philadelphia over the past week.

Hyde emphasized the team's all-out effort during these games. The weekend series highlighted the Orioles' strengths, matching up evenly with the Phillies, both teams excelling in home runs allowed, staff ERA, rotation ERA, and offensive production. Baltimore leads MLB in home runs, while Philadelphia is also among the top teams in runs scored.

Baltimore's performance against winning teams this season is unmatched, adding to their impressive weekend showing.

“That’s a really good ballclub over there,” Cowser said of the Phillies. “They’re going to win a lot of games.”
